When you decide to purchase security screens, you’re making a long-term investment in the safety of your home and family. Products like our Amplimesh® Supascreen® and Amplimesh® IntrudaGuard® security screens are incredibly durable and will last for decades if you commit to regular care and maintenance.
Keeping your windows and doors clean and in tip-top shape also helps boost your curb appeal — after all, no one likes looking at dusty screens! Here’s how to best take care of your screens.
Cleaning your security screens
The best way to keep your security screen doors looking great and performing well is to keep them clean. Cleaning your doors often will make it easier for you and minimise the excess build-up of dirt, pollen and insects. We recommend you give your doors a good clean at least every 3-4 months, or more frequently if you live near the ocean or in an industrial area you should clean them every 2-4 weeks.
You can do this by mixing clean, warm water and pH-neutral detergent to remove dust, dirt, and grime. Remember, dishwashing detergent is not recommended, however car wash detergent is a good choice. Once you’re done, give your doors a good rinse with water to remove detergent residue. Next, wipe over the frame with an absorbent cloth chamois to prevent water marks. Make sure you don’t use an abrasive cleaner (such as Ajax) or cleaning material (such as steel wool) as this may damage the door’s surface.
One of the best things about our Amplimesh® Supascreen® and Amplimesh® IntrudaGuard® screens is their ultra-clear views. To maintain your views, you can purchase an Amplimesh® Organic Security Door & Screen Cleaner to keep your screens sparkling clean.
Repairing your security screens
If your screen is made of powder-coated aluminium, you may notice minor scratches from normal wear and tear. You can gently buff out these scratches using a good quality car polish — but go slow to ensure you don’t remove the coated surface.
For more significant damage, make sure you talk to your security screen installer. Quality security screen products will have a warranty to protect you from any manufacturing defects. For example, our Amplimesh® SupaScreen® products come with a 16-year warranty, and our Amplimesh® IntrudaGuard® products come with a 10-year warranty. It’s important that you don’t try to repair the damage yourself as any modifications may void your warranty.
How to clean security window screens without removing them
You might be worried about removing the screens from your windows and getting them back in place. One way to get around this is to clean the screens without taking them out of their bracket.
Give the screens a quick dust inside and out with a microfibre cloth, and then prepare your cleaning solution of water and pH-neutral detergent. Use a small cloth to wipe over the screens until they’re spick and span before wiping them again with clean water to remove any detergent residue. Leave your windows open to air dry the front and back of your screen, and check that they’re completely dry before you close them up again.
Maintaining the locks, handle and hinges of your security screen doors
If you find the moving parts of your security screen doors are getting stiff, you can lubricate them with an aerosol-based lubricant. To lubricate your door locks, simply hold the handles down and spray the lubricant into the latch bolt cavity. You can then spread the lubricant around by moving the handle up and down a few times.
You can lubricate the door handles and hinge pivot pins of your door where they fit into the lock body. We don’t recommend you spray the lubricant directly into the key slots of the lock cylinders or onto the key. If you need to lubricate the lock cylinders, you can sparingly apply dry graphite powder.
